Community tab -> Players section -> Check if the alliance row is filled. (This functions starting from the second tick of the age/era on all servers).

Another way is spot a colony and check whether or not it has a flag (orange for leader, white for member), if so then that player is in an alliance. If not then that player is alliance-less.
