I am not a newbie, but I am trying to get this question answered cuase I am a newby to the BD like everyone else.

I just sent out a squad. I takes 6 ticks like everyone else. I get on tick away and the colony is all of the sudden conquered. No squads attacked it and no squads returned from it.

Is this a new feature, bug, or what?

did you build the radar yet, you dotn start with it on the client

New thing, you don't start with radar. You have to build it yourself, I think it should have been mentioned on the tutorial. Lots of newbs will be flying blind.
